With the New York Mets struggling, all eyes are on what they might do with first baseman Pete Alonso before the trade deadline.
The New York Mets have had a tough season in 2024, as they aren’t going anywhere any time soon. With that being said, they do have some big names on the team that could garner interest at the trade deadline.
One of those names is Pete Alonso. Alonso is one of the best power hitters in baseball, and he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. Recent reports have been that Alonso is seeking a massive deal this summer. Here’s what Bob Nightengale had to say about Alonso’s contract desires.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso will want “at least $200 million” when he hits free agency this winter, Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today.
If that is the number that Alonso is looking for in free agency, it will likely impact what his value is going to be at the trade deadline. $200 million is a big contract for anyone, and while Alonso is a great power hitter, not every team in the big leagues can afford that type of commitment.
For the New York Mets, if they have made up their minds that they don’t want to pursue an extension with Alonso, then they should try and trade him and get back the best possible package. As we saw last season at the trade deadline, the Mets are prioritizing rebuilding their farm system. Through trades, the farm system has drastically improved for the organization, but there is still a way to go.
For Pete Alonso, he has been a staple of the Mets’ lineup since he was called up. However, with the team struggling and him being a free agent at the end of the year, it is hard to imagine that he will be playing for the New York Mets the entire season, as a trade makes a lot of sense.
