Milwaukee Brewers Share Brutal Update on Young Pitcher

The Milwaukee Brewers have built a pretty comfortable lead in the NL Central. They are 6.5 games clear of their closest competition, but holding onto that lead will be challenging after some more brutal injury news was shared.

Ahead of Monday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, manager Pat Murphy was going over some of the injuries the team is dealing with. He made mention of starting pitchers Brandon Woodruff and Wade Miley, both of whom will miss the remainder of the season.

From what Murphy said, they will be joined by rookie Robert Gasser. “Miley, Gasser and Woody, you’re probably not going to see,” Murphy said. “It would probably be safe to say those three are out for the year.”

That is a brutal blow to the Milwaukee Brewers’ starting rotation and pitching depth. Gasser had been performing well in his first taste at the major league level, making five starts.

He has thrown 28 innings, allowing 29 hits and only one walk resulting in nine runs, eight of which were earned. Gasser had recorded 16 strikeouts, pitching mostly to contact and finding success trusting in his defense behind him.

Most importantly, the Milwaukee Brewers had been 5-0 in the games that Gasser started this season. He got a late start to the season because of bone spurs in his left elbow that led to being shut down near the end of Spring Training.

After pitching on June 1st against the Chicago White Sox, Gasser reported some tightness and soreness. He is currently dealing with a left flexor strain and the team is sending him for a third opinion on the injury.

“One doctor says get reconstruction,” Murphy said. “I don’t think you say it’s something that serious if in fact there isn’t something wrong. With that, his option is probably to come back and do the same thing he did before, and then what are we going to get and how do we know and where’s the kid’s mental state going to be? He’s a rookie, so I’m a little more pessimistic about that one. But I hope I’m wrong. I really do.”

Along with Woodruff, Miley and Gasser, the Milwaukee Brewers are also without Jacob Junis, DL Hall and Joe Ross. That is all on top of the team trading perennial Cy Young candidate Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles during the offseason.
