Mike Tomlin has been head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2007. He has been at the helm of the team for 17 seasons and will be remaining in that position for at least a few more years.

On Monday, it was announced that Mike Tomlin and the team had agreed to a three-year extension, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season. Entering Year 18 as head coach, he was in the final year of an extension signed in 2021.

Currently the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to ensure he didn’t have lame-duck status heading into the season. With some long-term security, the odds of him reaching 20 seasons with the franchise have certainly increased.

“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”

Rumors swirled near the end of the 2023 campaign that Mike Tomlin’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers could be coming to an end. A three-game losing streak against the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts sent people into a frenzy.

Before that stretch, the Pittsburgh Steelers were in the mix for the AFC North title at 7-4. The losses put their playoff hopes in jeopardy and Mike Tomlin’s streak of consecutive seasons to start a career at .500 or better. But, a late-season push led by Mason Rudolph helped them sneak into the postseason, and extend his streak.

He is only the third head coach the franchise has had since 1969, starting with Chuck Noll before Bill Cowher. The 173 regular season victories for Mike Tomlin are the second most in franchise history behind only Noll. Continuing his streak of not finishing below the .500 mark would put him on track to move into No. 1 on that list.

With 20 consecutive non-losing seasons, the Pittsburgh Steelers could tie the record held by the Dallas Cowboys from 1965-1985. They will be relying on a new quarterback room to do so, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields replacing Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Rudolph.
