The 2024 WNBA season has not gotten off to the best start for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft has struggled at times, seemingly being targeted by her peers during games. Recently, UConn Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma shared some comments on her transition to the pro ranks.
Geno Auriemma had some strong comments when Caitlin Clark was blindsided by Chennedy Carter of the Chicago Sky with a hard foul. The legendary head coach said it was junior high stuff that Carter did with how she conducted herself afterward. He also believes that players in the league are targeting Caitlin Clark.
In a recent interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Geno Auriemma offered more opinions on Caitlin Clark. In his opinion, she had the unfortunate luck of landing with the wrong team when being selected by the Indiana Fever.
“The kid was set up for failure right from the beginning,” Auriemma said June 6 during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “You know, [Phoenix Mercury star] Diana Taurasi was right. This kid is on the wrong team. She’s got the wrong skillset to handle the physicality of that league, and she’s a rookie.”
"The delusional fanbase that follows her disrespected the #WNBA players by saying she's going to go in that league and tear it a part… The kid was set up for failure right from the beginning."

The WNBA schedule makers did the Fever no favors with their early season schedule. They have already faced the Connecticut Sun and New York Liberty, who have the two best records in the league, five times.
3-9 on the season, some bumps in the road were expected for the Fever. But, many fans thought the addition of Caitlin Clark would result in a rapid turnaround, but that has not been the case.
“[Clark] needs to be on a better team, and she needs to be more experienced,” he said before criticizing the entire 2024 WNBA rookie class during the segment.
“There’s a huge target on this kid’s back,” he said. “[Los Angeles Sparks rookie] Cameron Brink said something really smart. She said, ‘Now they’re expecting this rookie class to be perfect.’ This rookie class isn’t even one of the best rookie classes in the last 10 years. But they’ve been put out to be that because of the way social media is today.” (H/T Heavy)
Caitlin Clark is one of many talented players who were selected in the 2024 WNBA Draft. But, Geno Auriemma makes some very good points. These aren’t 18 and 19-year-old kids they are going up against anymore. These are professionals who have been playing at the highest level for a long period of time and some adjustments will need to be made.
