New York Mets Rumors: Firesale on the Horizon

Recent New York Mets rumors are that a fire sale could be coming sooner rather than later.

It has been a tough season for the New York Mets once again. After being sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline last season, the Mets continued their losing ways to start things off in 2024. Unfortunately for the Mets, it doesn’t appear like things will be turning around anytime soon.

With the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies both light years away from the Mets in the standings, Bob Nightengale of USA recently spoke about the Mets’ plans for the trade deadline. Here’s what he had to say.

He continued: “They haven’t begun yet, but [the Mets] will soon shop first baseman Pete Alonso, designated hitter J.D. Martinez, starters Luis Severino, Sean Manaea and José Quintana, relievers Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett, infielder Jeff McNeil and outfielders Harrison Bader and Starling Marte.”

Due to the poor season, it should come as no surprise that pretty much everyone is being made available at the trade deadline. Perhaps the most notable name on the list, however, is Pete Alonso.

Alonso has been one of the best players on the team since he was called up and he’s been one of the best power hitters in all of baseball. Despite that, Alonso has entered a contract year and isn’t performing up to his standards, leading to him being prominent in Mets rumors.

There hasn’t been much indication that the Mets have any plans of giving him a big contract, as they might rather pursue a player like Juan Soto in free agency. If Alonso isn’t in the plans for the Mets, trading him makes a lot of sense.

While the Mets do have a ton of money to potentially spend in the offseason, this seems like a team that is entering a true rebuild sooner or later. Mets rumors will dominate the rumor mill given the current state of the franchise. The saving grace for them is that a few big signings in free agency in the next couple of years could expedite the process.
