Chicago Cubs Make Much-Needed Move In The Bullpen

As noted by keen observers, the Chicago Cubs’ transaction page was recently updated, indicating the optioning of right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas to the Iowa Cubs.

Interestingly, there was no immediate corresponding move listed alongside this transaction, leaving room for speculation until tomorrow’s game in Seattle.

While the Cubs haven’t revealed their next move, possibilities include relatively straightforward actions such as calling up Keegan Thompson or Hayden Wesneski, both already on the 40-man roster.

Alternatively, they might consider adding Carl Edwards Jr. or Richard Lovelady, although this would require a 40-man spot, potentially facilitated by transferring Julian Merryweather to the 60-day IL.

Although there’s a slight chance of a surprise addition, it seems more probable that one of the two 40-man roster players will be selected. Given Wesneski’s recent starting role for Iowa, Thompson appears to be the favored choice.

Regarding Cuas, it’s evident that despite the Cubs’ regard for the 29-year-old sidearmer, his performances this season fell short of expectations. With a 9.00 ERA and subpar strikeout and walk rates, it’s clear adjustments were necessary.

In light of this, sending Cuas to Iowa serves both to refresh the bullpen and to afford Cuas the opportunity to refine his game. While his sinker/sweeper combination holds promise, it’s essential for him to regain control and consistency.

The stint in Iowa provides him with the chance to work on his craft before potentially returning to the Chicago Cubs’ bullpen in the future.
