On Wednesday, the Houston Texans made a huge splash when they completed a trade with the Buffalo Bills. They acquired star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, along with a 2024 sixth-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
It was a deal that shocked a lot of people. For starters, the Bills getting back such a small package surprised a lot of people. The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to get more in exchange for Chase Claypool from the Chicago Bears ahead of the NFL trade deadline in 2022.
On top of that, Buffalo is taking on a historic amount of dead money for a non-quarterback by trading Diggs at this point. Was the relationship between the player and team so damaged that there was no coming back from it?
That would seem to be the case, but the Texans are certainly happy with how things have turned out. They have added an All-Pro wide receiver to help the ascension of their star quarterback, C.J. Stroud.
Stroud now has one of the best wide receiver trios in the NFL with Diggs joining Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Add in Robert Woods, Noah Brown and John Metchie III and Houston has a deep, talented group of wide receivers.
Houston has done a great job of upgrading their roster, looking to build upon their success last season when they surprisingly won the AFC South. During that process, an interesting roster anomaly occurred.
Diggs is the third former Minnesota Vikings player that the Texans have added to their team. They signed Danielle Hunter earlier in the offseason and have Case Keenum as the backup to Stroud.
All three of those players were on the Vikings team in 2017 that went 13-3 and lost in the NFC Championship Game to the Philadelphia Eagles. That has led to an interesting anomaly occurring in Houston.
As shared by Dominique Clare on X, the Texans now have more players on their roster from that 2017 team than the Vikings do. The only players that remain in Minnesota from that squad are safety Harrison Smith and CJ Ham.
It is funny how things turn out sometimes. While the Vikings are in a bit of a transitional phase, Houston is on the rise and will look to continue ascending with some former Minnesota standouts.
Not only are the Texans adding players who are considered upgrades to their roster, these are battle-tested veterans. Keenum is an excellent backup, while Hunter is as good as it gets when it comes to edge rushers. Diggs, the production speaks for itself as he is one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL.
