In a significant trade development, the New York Knicks succeeded in acquiring OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors, narrowly outbidding the Indiana Pacers before it became the latest NBA blockbuster deal. Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported the Pacers “came just shy” of landing the 26-year-old forward before the Knicks clinched the deal.

The Knicks traded RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a 2024 second-round draft pick to Toronto in exchange for Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa, and Malachi Flynn. The Pacers’ interest in Anunoby wasn’t new, as they had pursued him since last season.

As reported by ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the Pacers previously offered Toronto three first-round picks and a second-round pick for Anunoby leading up to the February 2023 trade deadline.

“Indiana, I heard offered three first-round picks and the Rockets’ second-round pick, which I believe they own in this upcoming draft,” Lowe said. “Which is almost like another first-round pick.”

While the specifics of Indiana’s recent offer remain unclear, the Raptors’ decision to accept the Knicks’ package suggests a preference for acquiring young, immediate contributors over draft picks.

The potential upside of Barrett and Quickley might have been a decisive factor for the Raptors. Barrett, despite struggles with consistency, has shown potential as a two-way wing, and Quickley’s 37.2 percent three-point shooting rate in 255 games makes him an attractive addition as a starting point guard.

The Pacers, in contrast, might have struggled to match the Knicks’ offer in terms of player potential. Bennedict Mathurin had a strong start as a rookie but has since faced challenges, while Andrew Nembhard and Obi Toppin are likely more suited to role player positions in a playoff team.

Anunoby, an Indiana University alum, would have been an ideal fit for the Pacers, particularly given their need for a versatile wing defender. However, with the Knicks securing the trade, Indiana is now tasked with exploring other options to strengthen their roster before the February 8 trade deadline.
