Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton deserves begrudging credit for the impact of his ‘loose lips sink ships’ directive within the team’s locker room. Most of Payton’s players have followed suit, offering rehearsed responses in the wake of the Russell Wilson drama.
However, one player, left tackle Garett Bolles, appears to be the exception to this rule.
Bolles, speaking candidly from his locker on Wednesday as reported by Denver Sports’ Andrew Mason, expressed his frustration.
He stated, “I don’t know, man. My job is just to block for the quarterback, so I protect him on the field, I protect him off the field. That’s what the Broncos pay me to do, so… as frustrating as it is, it’s frustrating for me, since I’ve been here for so long and it’s the same crap over and over again. But at the same time, I’ve gotta go out there and do my job, and that’s what I’m gonna continue to do.”
Bolles, a veteran blindside blocker, has witnessed his fair share of quarterback changes throughout his career with the Broncos. The stability brought by Russell Wilson in 2022 was short-lived, as the team benched Wilson in favor of Jarrett Stidham, citing a discrepancy between his contract and performance.
Bolles, despite blocking for Stidham in a recent win against the Los Angeles Chargers, remains frustrated with the ongoing quarterback controversy. He noted, “It’s a tough situation that things happen around here. I think [Stidham] was my 13th quarterback that I blocked for. So, it’s frustrating for me, especially. But at the same time, that’s who Coach Payton wanted, and I’ve got to do my job.”
The internal conflict within the team has been simmering for a while, evident from reports out of Dove Valley and Russell Wilson’s own comments. Payton’s strategic timing of the quarterback demotion, just after the Broncos’ playoff hopes dwindled, showed foresight. However, Bolles’ candid remarks hint at lingering tensions that Payton must address before the next season begins.
The Broncos’ prolonged struggles, missing the playoffs for eight consecutive years, can be partly attributed to quarterback instability, a point underscored by Bolles’ candid comments. His frustration, born from years of turmoil, may have given him an unexpected moment of clarity at his locker. The Broncos need resolution and stability to break their cycle of mediocrity.
