The Los Angeles Rams will be resting Matthew Stafford for their season finale against the San Francisco 49ers, meaning that Carson Wentz will be getting the start at quarterback.

Wentz signed with the Rams in November and will be making his first start since last January when he took the field for the Washington Commanders.

“Obviously, it’s a different role for me and it’s been new in that regard, but it’s been a lot of fun working with Matthew and seeing kind of how he goes about his business,” Wentz said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “It’s a very young coaching staff and that’s been really fun to be a part of. It’s a very different scheme than what I’m used to, all those things. So for me, it’s just been all about learning and just accumulating knowledge within this system and just being ready to help, so I’ve enjoyed it.”

Serving in a backup role is certainly something new for Wentz, who was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Wentz spent his first five seasons with the Eagles, making a Pro Bowl and finishing third in MVP voting in 2017. Of course, Wentz was famously injured late in the year, clearing the way for Nick Foles to lead Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl title.

Philly proceeded to trade Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts in March 2021, where he played just one season before being dealt to the Commanders.

Washington released Wentz last February.

Throughout his entire run between the Eagles, Colts and Commanders, Wentz started 92 games. Now, he is happy to just get back on the field.

“Excited to go get a chance and yes, there is still some stuff to play for and there’s things at stake and it’s January,” added Carson Wentz. “I haven’t played a game in a long time so I’m excited for it.”

The Rams have already clinched a playoff berth. They are 9-7.
