In a hard-fought road victory, the San Francisco 49ers boosted their 2025 campaign to a 6-3 mark by defeating the New York Giants 34-24 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The triumph kept San Francisco in the thick of the NFC West race, yet it highlighted the team’s mounting injury woes.

The price of success proved steep, as first-year pass rusher Mykel Williams exited the game with a suspected torn ACL, an injury expected to sideline him for the remainder of the year.

This latest setback adds to a growing list of absences for a 49ers defense already depleted by various ailments.

MetLife Stadium’s playing surface drew renewed scrutiny, having previously claimed Giants wideout Malik Nabers with an ACL tear this season. The venue’s artificial turf has become infamous among players and fans alike, often mocked online for its perceived role in non-contact injuries.

Following the game, Niners tight end George Kittle didn’t hold back on the issue during his media session.

“When someone’s field is the butt of a joke around all of social media constantly, on every NFL meme page, and everybody jokes about how bad it is, I feel like at that point, someone should just take a look at it. No NFL field should be the butt of a joke, ever,” Kittle said.

He advocated for league-wide uniformity in field surfaces to enhance player protection.

“I feel like all fields should have a level of safety to them,” Kittle said. “I don’t get why there’s not a standard. ‘Hey, you’ve got to pick between one or two turfs.’ There shouldn’t be 12 different [types of] turfs and 12 different grass fields… I just think that’s weird… It’s not like basketball players are playing on different hard wood. Soccer players in Europe all play on really nice grass. It’s just weird to me.”

On the stat sheet, Kittle contributed modestly with four receptions for 32 yards in the contest. The dependable veteran has now amassed 12 grabs for 100 yards and a pair of scores across his four appearances this year.

Looking ahead, San Francisco shifts focus to a divisional clash with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10, set for this Sunday at home. The 49ers will aim to build momentum despite the fresh adversity.
