With the trade deadline quickly approaching, rumors indicate that the New York Mets are wide open for business. Aside from a select few untouchable cornerstones like superstar outfielder Juan Soto, almost anyone on the roster could be moved if the price is right.

While the market features several high-profile relievers and starting pitchers, one of the most intriguing names to surface in trade discussions is catcher Francisco Alvarez.

Once regarded as MLB Pipeline’s top overall prospect in baseball at the time of his debut, Alvarez possesses undeniable upside at just 24 years old.

Though he has yet to fully live up to those towering expectations at the major league level, a young catcher with his kind of ceiling remains a highly coveted asset.

Across the league, a significant number of teams are in dire need of catching help, and the Mets could leverage his potential to bring back a substantial return as they look to retool.

Perhaps the most fascinating wrinkle in Alvarez’s availability is that the crosstown rival New York Yankees have been named as a potential trade destination, via Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com.

It is rare to see the two New York franchises engage in high-stakes trades, but the Yankees’ pressing need for catching upgrades makes them a natural fit for Alvarez’s services.

Under team control through the 2029 season, Alvarez offers the Yankees both short-term stability and long-term potential at a premium position, making him an enticing target if the Mets decide to pivot away from him.

A potential roadblock to a deal is the Mets’ own organizational depth.

The front office may ultimately prove hesitant to pull the trigger on an Alvarez trade so early in his career, especially given the lack of an immediate, major-league-ready backstop waiting in the wings to replace him.

While the Mets have veteran Luis Torrens under contract through 2028, he is best utilized in a backup role rather than as a everyday starter.

Nevertheless, with the Mets willing to listen to offers on virtually anyone, the possibility of Alvarez making the rare jump across town to the Bronx remains one of the most compelling storylines ahead of the deadline.
