As the MLB trade deadline on August 3 draws closer, the New York Yankees appear poised to bolster their roster with a new catcher. The team has explored several options behind the plate, but one prominent voice in baseball analysis is floating an unexpected target that could reshape the Yankees’ lineup for seasons ahead.
Former major leaguer and current analyst Trevor Plouffe has singled out Arizona Diamondbacks backstop Gabriel Moreno as a strong fit for New York.
Plouffe believes the Yankees possess the necessary resources to pull off such a deal, highlighting the young catcher’s long-term control and immediate impact potential.
“I just don’t think it’s (Jeffers to the Yankees) going to happen,” Plouffe said on Talkin’ Baseball. “I do think the Yankees have a ton to give up, high minor-league players ready to make the jump. This guy has control, this year plus two more. Catcher from the Snakes, Gabriel Moreno, goes to the Yankees.”
Plouffe continued by emphasizing the strategic alignment of the potential acquisition. He pointed to Arizona’s depth at the position and New York’s ability to deliver talent that is prepared for the big leagues right away.
“I think they can go out and get this guy. They have a bit of a logjam at the top there. The Diamondbacks would want major league-ready talent, and the Yankees can give them that. This is the solution for a couple of years; this lines up with Judge and that whole window. He’d be a hell of a New York Yankee.”
Landing Moreno would represent a significant upgrade for the Yankees. At 26 years old, the catcher is enjoying a productive campaign, batting .301 with six home runs and 32 runs batted in for Arizona. His presence could stabilize the position and provide reliable production through multiple postseason opportunities.
The addition would align perfectly with the team’s competitive window, especially alongside star outfielder Aaron Judge. Moreno remains under team control through the 2028 season, offering New York stability at catcher for three full seasons of playoff contention.
Current Yankees catcher Austin Wells has faced challenges this year, delivering a .155 batting average along with six home runs and 13 RBIs. While he was projected to play a central role in the offense, his performance has prompted the front office to seek improvements before the deadline.

“It’s going to be really difficult to pry Goodman away from the Rockies considering he’s by far their best player, but he would be a great fit, as would Adley Rutschman of the Orioles. Both would be game changers,” Bowden wrote.
Bowden went on to outline other realistic possibilities while keeping Moreno in the conversation.
“However, I think more realistic options include Ryan Jeffers of the Twins (once he gets healthy), Agustín Ramírez of the Marlins, Joey Bart of the Pirates, Carson Kelly of the Cubs, Gabriel Moreno of the Diamondbacks and Keibert Ruiz of the Nationals.”
Any deal for Moreno would likely demand a substantial return from Arizona. The Diamondbacks would seek high-value prospects or major league-ready players in exchange, given the catcher’s age and contractual control.
Fortunately, the Yankees maintain a strong farm system with several top-tier prospects nearing readiness for the majors. This depth positions them well to meet Arizona’s asking price if the organizations can find common ground.
Although trading Moreno might seem improbable for a contending Diamondbacks squad, his name continues to surface in deadline speculation.
