The New York Yankees made their first move ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Saturday, sending right-handed reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz, both minor-league prospects.
The deal, first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, comes with the deadline just two days away and reflects the club’s desire to address areas of organizational need while moving on from a pitcher who never found consistency in the Bronx.
Doval arrived in New York from the San Francisco Giants at last year’s trade deadline amid hopes that the former All-Star could shore up a struggling bullpen. Those expectations largely went unmet.
In his initial stretch with the Yankees, he posted a 4.82 ERA across 22 appearances, accompanied by a concerning 1.607 WHIP. There were brief flashes of the dominance that once defined him, particularly late in the regular season and into the playoffs, which left some room for optimism heading into 2026. That optimism faded quickly.
Through 44 outings this season, Doval carried a 4.54 ERA and 1.412 WHIP while seeing his strikeout rate drop to a career-low 8.8 per nine innings. What began as a high-upside acquisition had become a clear candidate to be moved.
In return the Yankees received two young prospects with upside. Alfonzo, a 22-year-old catcher, has spent most of the current season at Double-A, where he is hitting .238 with a .337 on-base percentage and .419 slugging percentage, including nine home runs and 35 RBI in 247 plate appearances.
A product of the Pirates’ system since 2021, he owns a career minor-league line of .240/.360/.386 with 44 home runs. While he is not expected to contribute at the major-league level this year, he offers the kind of catching depth New York has sought and could become a viable option in 2027.
Cruz is even younger at 18. The Dominican outfielder has shown advanced plate discipline in limited action. This season he is batting .313 with a robust .460 on-base percentage across 64 plate appearances, drawing 12 walks against only two strikeouts.
Last year in Rookie Ball he posted a similar eye at the plate, walking more than he struck out while posting a .400 on-base percentage. Power has yet to develop, but his ability to control the strike zone at such a young age makes him an intriguing long-term piece.
Given Doval’s struggles, the package represents a sensible return. The Yankees gain two developmental assets without surrendering a significant portion of their current roster, and they free a roster spot in a bullpen that has required constant attention.
As the deadline approaches, this first move may signal further activity, but for now it provides a clear indication of how the front office views both its present needs and its future depth.
