The San Francisco Giants are clear sellers before the MLB trade deadline, looking to extract value from a roster that has underperformed expectations this season.

At the center of their available talent sits Luis Arraez, the three-time batting champion who joined the club last winter on a one-year deal after a prolonged free-agent process.

Yet even as one of the more obvious candidates to change teams before the cutoff, Arraez has drawn surprisingly muted interest across the league, according to the The Athletic.

Arraez arrived in San Francisco after lingering on the open market into late January, eventually agreeing to a $12 million contract that allowed him to return to second base, the position he prefers. The move has paid dividends on the field. Entering the final days before the deadline, the 29-year-old was hitting .328 with an .811 OPS, marks that represent his strongest offensive output since 2023.

He has also shown clear improvement defensively at second, re-establishing himself there after earlier questions about his range and arm strength. For a Giants team that has struggled to generate consistent production and is unlikely to contend this year, moving Arraez made practical sense.

He is a pending free agent, and the organization can turn his strong half-season into prospects that help rebuild the farm system.

The challenge has been finding willing partners. Despite Arraez’s pedigree as a pure contact hitter who rarely strikes out and his recent resurgence, demand has remained limited. Few contending clubs are actively searching for help specifically at second base.

The Tampa Bay Rays stand out as one of the clearer fits, given their need at the position, but elsewhere the picture is thinner. Teams that once seemed logical have turned their attention elsewhere.

The Texas Rangers, initially viewed as a possible destination, have prioritized other areas of their roster. The Boston Red Sox prefer to address shortstop. The Houston Astros, even while ranking near the bottom in offensive production at second base, are not inclined to move Jose Altuve. Arraez’s former club in San Diego is more focused on pitching upgrades than adding another bat.

Options at first base also appear constrained. Clubs such as the Cleveland Guardians and Arizona Diamondbacks could theoretically use an upgrade there, yet both may hesitate to absorb the roughly $3.5 million remaining on Arraez’s deal.

Compounding that is Arraez’s own preference. As he prepares to re-enter free agency this coming offseason, he has made clear he does not want to shift to first base, preferring to continue building his case as a second baseman.

The result is a curious market dynamic. Arraez ranks among the players most likely to be traded, given the Giants’ position as sellers and his rental status, yet the list of realistic suitors remains short. Some club is expected to find a place for a hitter of his caliber before the deadline passes, but the limited appetite underscores how specialized his skill set has become in today’s game.

Contenders often seek power, athleticism, or positional versatility more than pure average and contact, and Arraez’s insistence on remaining at second base narrows the field further.

For the Giants, the situation is straightforward. Arraez has provided a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign, delivering the kind of consistent at-bats that have been scarce. Trading him would close a brief chapter that began with a late free-agent signing and offered a temporary solution at a premium position. That’s if San Francisco can find a suitor.
