Yankees Pitcher Gets Brutally Honest on Concerning Struggles

When the New York Yankees swung a trade to acquire Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason, they were hoping they completely solidified the back end of their bullpen.

Well, Williams has been anything but a stalwart for the Yankees in the early stages of the 2025 MLB season, as he has allowed five runs—four earned—over his first four appearances and already has a loss to his name. On Wednesday, he nearly blew a save against the Detroit Tigers and had to be replaced by Mark Leiter Jr. after giving up three runs in the ninth inning of a 4-3 win.

After the game, Williams opened up on his struggles and seemed to take full responsibility for his performance thus far, saying that while he hasn’t “felt like 100 percent myself up to this point,” he feels fine physically and simply needs to execute better, via Gary Phillips of The New York Daily News.

The 30-year-old added that he has experienced difficulty early on in the season before, so this is nothing new to him. He owns a 12.00 ERA thus far.

New York sent starting pitcher Nestor Cortes to the Brewers in exchange for Williams, and while some Yankees fans may already want that trade back, it’s important to keep in mind that Cortes is now out with shoulder issues.

Meanwhile, Williams logged ERAs south of 2.00 in each of his final three campaigns in Milwaukee, earning back-to-back All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023.

The St. Louis native is slated to hit free agency next offseason, so couple that with the added pressure of pitching in the Bronx, and you can understand why the screws may have tightened on Williams over the course of his first couple of weeks with the Yankees.

Williams has yet to register a save, so perhaps once he achieves that feat, things will get a bit easier for the right-hander.
