The Washington Nationals added a former top prospect to their organization this week, claiming 25-year-old right-hander Chase Hampton off waivers from the New York Yankees.
The move, logged in MLB’s official transactions, gives Washington another arm to evaluate as the regular season winds down.
Hampton’s path to this point has been defined by both promise and setbacks. Selected by New York in the sixth round of the 2022 draft out of Texas Tech, he quickly climbed prospect rankings and appeared on multiple top-100 lists. That trajectory stalled last year when he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone later described the pitcher as still possessing the talent to become a strong major-league contributor, calling the injury a pause rather than a permanent halt. Boone noted that Hampton himself seemed focused on getting healthy and resuming his development.
This season the results in the Yankees’ minor-league system have been uneven. Across 55 innings Hampton posted an 8.18 ERA and has yet to appear in a big-league game.
Over his full minor-league career, he has compiled a 4.89 ERA with 217 strikeouts in 180 1/3 innings. New York designated him for assignment on September 7 to open a 40-man roster spot for Aaron Judge, who had just returned from an 84-game stay on the injured list.
For the Nationals the claim is a low-cost look at a pitcher who once generated considerable scouting interest. Washington sits at 68-81 and is all but mathematically eliminated from postseason play.
The club is in the middle of a weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels at Nationals Park after taking Friday’s opener 4-3. Saturday’s game was scheduled for a 4:05 p.m. Eastern start.
The Yankees, meanwhile, remain in the hunt. They entered the weekend at 85-62, holding the first American League wild-card position and sitting three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. New York opened a Subway Series against the Mets at Yankee Stadium on Friday and won the first game.
Whether Hampton can recapture the form that once made him a highly regarded prospect will now be Washington’s question to answer.
The Nationals gain a young right-hander with strikeout ability and remaining option years, while the Yankees create roster flexibility as they push toward October.
For a pitcher still only 25, the change of scenery may prove the latest chapter in a career that has already included both high expectations and significant physical challenges.
