The St. Louis Cardinals opened their series against the Chicago White Sox with a 7-3 win on Friday night, and Jordan Walker was a visible part of that result.
After sitting out Wednesday, the young outfielder returned to the lineup and produced two hits and two runs in four at-bats. That kind of night would normally keep a first-time All-Star in the Saturday lineup. Instead, manager Oliver Marmol made a different call.
Walker is not starting Game 2. Joshua Baez is in right field, Nathan Church is in center, and Jose Fermin is in left. Ivan Herrera is the designated hitter, Alec Burleson is at first, Leonardo Bernal is catching, Nolan Gorman is at third, Thomas Saggese is at second, and Masyn Winn is at shortstop, via Underdog MLB.
Kyle Leahy gets the ball on the mound. The move comes one day after Walker showed he was ready to contribute again, which is why it landed as a surprise.
This has been Walker’s strongest season in a Cardinals uniform. In his fourth year with the club he made his first All-Star team.
Through 144 games and 562 at-bats, he is hitting .283 with 92 runs, 159 hits, 28 home runs, and 100 RBIs. His slugging percentage sits at .491 and his OPS at .829. Those numbers explain why fans expected him to stay in the everyday mix down the stretch.
St. Louis, however, is playing from behind. The Cardinals are 73-75 and sit fourth in the National League Central, 19 games out of first. They are 6.5 games short of a Wild Card berth with 14 regular-season games left.
A team in that position often rotates players to find any extra edge, rest a bat after a night of extra work, or simply match up against a particular pitcher. Marmol has not publicly spelled out the exact reason for sitting Walker on Saturday, but the standings make every lineup choice feel heavier than it would in June.
Walker’s production this year has been one of the brighter spots on a roster that has spent most of the summer trying to stay relevant. Sitting him after a two-hit night does not erase that.
It does, however, raise the usual late-season questions about how St. Louis intends to use its best young hitter over the final two weeks.
Whether the decision is rest, matchup, or something else, the Cardinals will need Walker’s bat if they hope to close any of that Wild Card gap.
For one Saturday night in September, they are choosing to look elsewhere.
