When Steve Cohen took over as owner of the New York Mets in November 2020, he vowed to bring championships to a starving organization he has rooted for all of his life.

Well, here we are in July 2026, and the Mets are arguably further away from a World Series title now than they were when Cohen bought the franchise.

New York is sitting at 36-50 and in last place in the NL East. It also won just 83 games last season in spite of spending nearly $800 million to sign Juan Soto.

The Mets’ ineptitude this season resulted in the recent firing of manager Carlos Mendoza, but fans felt he was more of a scapegoat than anything else.

The fanbase has been calling for the dismissal of general manager David Stearns, who did a horrific job building this ballclub over the last couple of offseasons. However, those hoping for Stearns’ imminent departure will be disappointed.

Cohen made an appearance on The Show podcast on Tuesday and stated that not only is Stearns safe right now, but his job is also secure through 2028.

This even though just about every decision Stearns has made has been the wrong one.

That being said, Cohen deserves equal — if not more — blame.

It was Cohen’s decision to spend lavishly on Soto, and let’s be honest: he still has to sign off on all of the decisions that Stearns makes.

So if Mets fans want to direct their ire toward someone, it should be Cohen, who has failed to deliver on his promises and has led New York to just two playoff appearances — and only one 90-win campaign — since assuming the position.

The Mets have been one of the worst teams in baseball since last summer, and there appears to be no end in sight.
