Steelers Justin Fields Speaks on Kick Return Rumors

A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields could be used as the team’s kick returner. While appearing on Cam Heyward’s podcast, running back Jaylen Warren revealed the eye-popping update.

However, it was something that Justin Fields says was taken a bit out of context by people in the media. He was able to get a good laugh when asked about it, sharing what special teams coordinator Danny Smith meant.

“I think everybody kind of interpreted it wrong,” Fields told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Coach Danny was basically just trying to send a message that no matter who you are, you could be on special teams. He just used that as an example.

“… It’s funny how serious social media takes everything. It was kind of funny to me when everybody was making a big deal about it for no reason.”

A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, Justin Fields could probably find success as a return man. He is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands as one of the best running quarterbacks in the NFL.

But, it isn’t a serious path for him. Being a return man is not something Justin Fields has done at any level of playing football. He is focused on playing quarterback and competing with veteran Russell Wilson for the starting job.

“Hey, you never know,” Fields told the Post-Gazette on Tuesday. “He might cook something up. We’ll see what happens.”

Really?

“Nah, I’m not here to do that,” Fields said. “It was kind of a joke, to be honest with you.”

We can now put to rest the idea of Justin Fields playing on special teams with the Steelers. However, it would not be surprising to see him have some packages on Sundays created by offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

Backup quarterback is a very important position on the team, but the Steelers should still look to take advantage of the skills he brings to the table. Getting him on the field with Wilson, or in place of him, will help create some mismatches to take advantage of during the game.
