Saquon Barkley made his presence felt in the snow Sunday afternoon, rushing for two long touchdowns, including a 78-yard run late in the game, as the Philadelphia Eagles held off the Los Angeles Rams, 28-22, to advance to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three seasons.
Barkley finished with 205 rushing yards, highlighted by a 62-yard touchdown in the first half and his 78-yard run that sealed the victory. After the play, Barkley slapped his helmet in celebration, flapping his arms as he slid into the snow in front of an energized crowd at Lincoln Financial Field.
“The elements were great, but the atmosphere was even better,” Barkley said. “Our fans were amazing. That was a close one, but that’s playoff football. And at the end of the day, we got the job done.”
The Eagles, who will host the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, saw Barkley carry the offense while quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled with a knee injury, which required him to wear a brace in the second half. Hurts managed 128 passing yards, but he had a rough day behind the offensive line, getting sacked seven times. Despite his injuries, Hurts rushed for a career-long 44-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Eagles an early lead.
The Rams, led by veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, managed to keep the game close but ultimately fell short. Stafford threw for 324 yards and a touchdown, but his performance was marred by several key turnovers. In the final moments, the Rams’ hopes of a comeback ended after Stafford was sacked by Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, and his final pass on fourth down was incomplete.
“We had every opportunity to win that game at the end,” said Rams coach Sean McVay. “We’re a couple plays away from me being a lot happier right now. I’m happy to be a part of this team and proud of this group.”
The Eagles defense played a major role in the victory, capitalizing on Rams mistakes, including a key fumble by running back Kyren Williams and a strip-sack of Stafford. The Rams also saw kicker Jake Elliott make two field goals, including one that helped extend their lead to 22-15 in the third quarter.
Despite the hard-fought win, Eagles players took time to celebrate with their fans, who braved the cold and snow. Some fans even went shirtless while others joined in snow angels in the end zone.
For the Los Angeles Rams, the defeat was a tough end to an up-and-down season. “We fought to the end,” Stafford said. “But we came up short.”
With their NFC Championship berth secured, the Philadelphia Eagles will turn their focus to facing the Washington Commanders next Sunday. The road to the Super Bowl continues for Barkley, Hurts, and the Eagles, as they look to build on their gritty playoff victory.
