The Cincinnati Reds have been one of baseball’s more disappointing teams this season, and they are expected to sell at the MLB trade deadline as a result.

But what about Elly De La Cruz?

De La Cruz is the Reds’ top young pitcher, and he is under club control through 2029. Nevertheless, trade speculation has swirled around the two-time All-Star, with some even wondering if it would be best for Cincinnati to trade De La Cruz now to maximize its return.

Recently, Reds president Nick Krall was discussing his team’s plans at the trade deadline, and he provided a slight hint to De La Cruz’s future with the franchise.

“I think we have a lot of talent on this club,” Krall said, via MLB.com. “We have a really good young core still.”

That indicates that Cincinnati likely plans to hold on to De La Cruz, who is slashing .276/.354/.498 with 17 home runs and 46 RBI over 376 plate appearances this season.

Now, to play devil’s advocate, Krall did say that the Reds will listen on everybody and are open to any offers that will make their team better.

But does it seem like Cincy is actively shopping De La Cruz? Absolutely not.

The Reds made the playoffs last season, so jettisoning De La Cruz now just because of one down season wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Krall wasn’t asked about De La Cruz directly, but you can only assume that trading the young shortstop is not something currently on his radar.

Cincinnati recently signed pitcher Chase Burns to a seven-year, $105 million contract extension, demonstrating the club’s commitment to the future.

Could an extension for De La Cruz be next? The Dominican native would certainly be considerably more pricey, which is why some have floated the idea of a De La Cruz trade to begin with.

But for now, it looks like De La Cruz is staying put through Aug. 3.
