Pittsburgh Pirates’ Paul Skenes Is the First Player to Ever Do This

Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates

Since being promoted to the major leagues, Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitching Paul Skenes has taken the league by storm. The No. 1 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft had incredibly high expectations coming out of LSU.

He was considered one of the best pitching prospects ever. Paul Skenes was being mentioned alongside Stephen Strasburg and Mark Prior for how polished of a player he was entering professional baseball.

Expectations were high, but it turns out, they weren’t high enough. What he accomplished at the start of his professional career has not been achieved by another player in the history of baseball.

In nine starts, Paul Skenes has gone 4-0 with a 2.06 ERA. He has thrown 52.1 innings, allowing only 44 hits and 10 walks, resulting in 12 earned runs. Opposing batters are being blown away regularly, as he has racked up 70 strikeouts.

Covers on X has shared the list of pitchers who have struck out at least 70 batters while allowing 12 or fewer runs in MLB history. The list is Paul Skenes and no one else.

The LSU product is already cementing himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball. His advanced stats are all through the roof, as he will be near or atop the league in several categories once he has pitched enough to be eligible.

Paul Skenes isn’t only feasting on underwhelming lineups either. No matter who is stepping into the box against him, he is finding success. His splinker is currently the nastiest pitch in baseball, leaving hitters perplexed at the plate.

The future is bright for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as they have a stable of pitchers that will make any opponent nervous in a playoff series. If they are able to upgrade their offense and qualify for the playoffs, good luck in a short series against Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Jared Jones.
