Green Bay Packers superstar Micah Parsons is expected to miss a significant portion of the early 2026 season as he continues recovering from a torn ACL suffered late last year, but Matt Schneidman of The Athletic thinks he might be back sooner than anticipated.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, Schneidman offered an updated outlook on the star defender’s timeline, suggesting Parsons will likely sit out the first month-and-a-half of the campaign before making his return in Week 6 at Lambeau Field against the Dallas Cowboys.
That’s definitely encouraging news given that many other projections had Parsons not retaking the field until the second half of the season.
Schneidman later expanded on that assessment, describing a Week 6 debut as the best-case scenario. The Packers maintain a strict nine-month rule prohibiting any football activity for players rehabbing major injuries, which would allow Parsons to return to practice no earlier than preparations for Week 4.
From there, he would still need time to ramp up to game readiness. While Schneidman acknowledged Parsons’ exceptional physical gifts, he also noted the remaining uncertainties in the recovery process.
Parsons tore his left ACL on Dec. 14, 2025, during a non-contact injury against the Denver Broncos and underwent surgery on Dec. 29 that also included a meniscus procedure. The Packers’ cautious approach to such recoveries has been consistent over the years, prioritizing long-term health over an accelerated return.
Parsons himself has previously emphasized patience, stressing that the priority remains completing a full season and contributing in the playoffs rather than rushing back too soon and risking a setback.
The timing carries extra intrigue given the opponent. Parsons spent the first several years of his career with the Cowboys before joining Green Bay, and a potential homecoming game against his former team under the lights at Lambeau would provide a dramatic stage for his return.
In the meantime, the Packers will open training camp without him, as he is expected to begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, automatically costing him at least the first four games.
For a defense that relied heavily on Parsons’ disruptive presence last season, when he recorded 12.5 sacks in 14 games, the early absence will test the unit’s depth and scheme flexibility.
Yet the organization and the player appear aligned on a measured path forward, one designed to ensure Parsons is at full strength when he eventually steps back onto the field.
Parsons has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first five NFL seasons.
