Former Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson’s professional football career has come to a close after the Jacksonville Jaguars placed the cornerback on the reserve/retired list Tuesday.
NFL reporter Ari Meirov first reported that the 29-year-old has chosen to step away from the game, bringing a quiet end to a six-year journey that began as a long-shot prospect and evolved into a reliable depth piece across three franchises.
Jackson never carried the profile of a household name in Buffalo’s secondary, yet he steadily carved out meaningful opportunities after the Bills selected him with the 239th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Coming out of Pittsburgh as a seventh-round selection, he entered the league with limited expectations and gradually climbed the depth chart through consistent work and opportunity.
His playing time expanded noticeably in 2021, when he broke into the starting lineup and finished the season with 41 tackles along with six passes defended.
The following year proved to be the high-water mark of his career. In 2022, Jackson started 14 games and posted career-best numbers of 57 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes defended while the Bills navigated a string of injuries in the defensive backfield.
He remained with Buffalo through the 2023 campaign before signing with the Carolina Panthers in 2024. There he appeared in nine games. The next season brought a return to the Bills, though that second stint lasted only three contests.
Across 64 regular-season games and 31 starts, Jackson compiled 178 tackles, three interceptions and 30 passes defended. The totals reflect a player who maximized limited opportunities rather than one who dominated as a premier cover corner.
From the outset, Jackson earned the confidence of Buffalo’s coaching staff. He was frequently called upon when injuries forced adjustments along the secondary and recorded his first career interception as a rookie. Those early contributions laid the foundation for the expanded roles that followed in subsequent seasons.
Though he never emerged as one of the league’s elite cornerbacks, Jackson demonstrated the staying power that many late-round selections fail to achieve.
