Chris Payton-Jones, a defensive back who spent parts of four seasons in the National Football League with multiple organizations, tragically lost his life in a car accident on April 11. The 30-year-old former player was the sole fatality in the collision that took place late that evening.
According to local reports, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. in Alachua County, Florida. Payton-Jones was driving a sedan that collided head-on with a pickup truck heading in the opposite direction. Authorities confirmed he was the only person who did not survive the crash.
The three occupants inside the pickup truck sustained only minor injuries, allowing them to avoid serious harm from the high-impact event. The accident has left the football community mourning the sudden loss of a dedicated athlete known for his perseverance throughout his career.
Payton-Jones enjoyed a notable collegiate career as a cornerback at the University of Nebraska. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in 2016 for his strong performances on the field. Unfortunately, a knee injury sidelined him for the first half of his senior year, which contributed to him going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Detroit Lions took a chance on the talented defensive back, signing him as an undrafted free agent in April 2018. However, he was released at the conclusion of training camp on September 1, 2018, as the team finalized its roster.
Just days after his release from Detroit, Payton-Jones joined the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. He made his mark by appearing in two regular-season games as a reserve during the 2018 campaign. The following year, in 2019, he stepped up significantly, playing in 11 games for Arizona, which included his first three career starts as an NFL player.
Over the next few seasons from 2020 to 2022, Payton-Jones continued his professional journey by signing with several additional teams, including returns to the Lions, as well as stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. Despite the frequent moves, he remained committed to competing at the highest level.
During the 2020 and 2021 seasons combined, he saw the field in 16 regular-season contests, though much of his time was spent contributing on practice squads. In total, across his 29 NFL appearances, Payton-Jones recorded 48 tackles and defended seven passes, showcasing his reliability as a depth defender.
After wrapping up his NFL tenure, Payton-Jones transitioned to alternative professional leagues, suiting up for the Seattle SeaDragons in the XFL and later the St. Louis Battlehawks in the UFL between 2022 and 2024. Beyond the gridiron, he maintained a connection to sports by operating a YouTube channel called Flashflix, which focused on covering local athletics in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. He had recently made the decision to retire from playing football.
Those who knew him best remembered Payton-Jones for his exceptional character and work ethic. Adam Geis, his former coach at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, shared heartfelt praise for the young man he mentored.
“He was one of my all-time favorites!” Geis told News 4 Jacksonville. “The kid never missed a workout, never missed practice, and never wanted to come off the field. Everyone loved him,” Geis said. “He was always unbelievably positive. I’ve never heard that kid ever say anything negative about anyone or anything. … It was always a pleasure to be around him. You were always happy to see him.”
