As the New York Giants explore options to bolster their quarterback roster, they may set their sights on Matthew Stafford, the experienced signal-caller from the Los Angeles Rams.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on The Rich Eisen Show that the Rams have given Stafford’s agent the green light to initiate discussions with other teams, potentially opening the door for a move.
This decision by the Rams allows them to understand Stafford’s market value as they consider re-signing him for the 2025 season. “The priority seems to be for Stafford to be back with Los Angeles in 2025, and these talks will provide an avenue for the Rams to determine what his value is within the NFL right now,” Pelissero explained.
The Giants are in a pressing situation, having endured consecutive losing seasons under head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. With all their quarterbacks, including Drew Lock, Tim Boyle, and Tommy DeVito, set to hit free agency, the team’s need to secure a reliable quarterback has become urgent.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic commented on the potential pairing, stating, “Stafford’s rumored interest in the Giants makes perfect sense,” especially if New York opts not to use their No. 3 draft pick on a quarterback.
Stafford is 37 years old and has had a notable NFL career, marked by two Pro Bowl selections and significant statistical achievements. In the 2024 season, he threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns and maintained a 65.8% completion rate over 16 starts with the Rams, showcasing his ongoing capability to perform at a high level.
The Rams’ financial aspect of retaining Stafford is significant, as his current contract includes a $49.7 million cap hit for 2025. Last July, Stafford agreed to a restructured deal that included $23.5 million in guaranteed money, underscoring the complex negotiations surrounding his future with the team.
Meanwhile, the Giants’ quarterbacks struggled significantly last season, ranking last in the NFL in passing touchdowns and near the bottom in other key metrics. The addition of a veteran like Stafford could provide stability and dramatically improve their offensive output.
Matthew Stafford’s contract situation resolution will be closely watched as the offseason unfolds. It could impact the Los Angles Rams, New York Giants, and other quarterback-market teams.
