Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will play in Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, despite dealing with a high right ankle sprain. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport confirmed Herbert’s status, ending speculation about whether he would suit up after being added to the injury report earlier in the week.

Herbert suffered the injury during the Chargers’ Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers, where he was pulled down in the third quarter.

Despite the injury, Herbert remained in the game, throwing for 130 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. After the game, Herbert admitted the pain was significant and was seen walking with a limp.

Chargers’ Optimism and Injury Management

Heading into the weekend, Herbert’s status remained uncertain, with the quarterback missing practices on Wednesday and Friday, though he was a limited participant on Thursday.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed optimism, emphasizing that the plan was to manage Herbert’s injury carefully, and by Saturday, reports indicated that Herbert was feeling much better.

Herbert acknowledged on Friday that the pain in his ankle was still an issue, but he remained focused on recovery. “It’s all about getting treatment and limiting the swelling,” Herbert said. Despite these concerns, the Chargers listed him as questionable, hoping his condition would improve enough for him to play.

Known for his toughness, Herbert has battled multiple injuries this season, including a previous foot issue in training camp. However, he has remained a critical piece of the Chargers’ 2-0 start, completing 67.4% of his passes for 274 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception through two games.

Steelers Face a Tough Challenge With Herbert in the Lineup

Herbert’s presence is a major boost for the Chargers as they face off against the Steelers. Although the Chargers have leaned heavily on their run game so far this season, Herbert’s arm will be essential in the Week 3 matchup, even if his mobility is limited.

If Herbert struggles during the game, backups Easton Stick and Taylor Heinicke are available, though Harbaugh has not provided any details on contingency plans.

The Chargers will aim for a 3-0 start to the season, a feat not achieved by the franchise since Drew Brees was quarterback in 2002. With Herbert active, Los Angeles has a chance to continue its strong early-season form, though the Steelers’ defense will undoubtedly try to capitalize on Herbert’s injury limitations.
