The New York Yankees have certainly had some rough injury luck in spring training. Not only have they lost Giancarlo Stanton for an indefinite period of time due to mysterious elbow issues, the Yankees are also down three pitchers in Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt.
Cole is done for the season due to Tommy John surgery, Gil is out for a few months as a result of a lat strain and Schmidt has been dealing with both back and shoulder problems. Not great.
As a result, New York has Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and not a whole lot else in terms of reliable starting pitching options, so the Yankees may want to peruse the trade market.
Christopher Kline of FanSided has proposed a wild blockbuster trade for the Bronx Bombers, linking them to Philadelphia Phillies All-Star left-hander Ranger Suarez.
While Suarez himself is dealing with a back injury that has landed him on the injured list to begin the 2025 MLB campaign, he isn’t expected to miss extended time. So, why would the Phillies move him? Well, Suarez is slated to hit free agency next offseason, and Philadelphia has plenty of pitching depth.
“Now, Dave Dombrowski generally pays his guys — and it’s worth noting the not-insignificant amount of cash coming off the books next season as Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, and Max Kepler hit free agency,” Kline wrote. “That said, Philly is loaded on the rotation front, with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo all locked up for 2026 and beyond. Plus, there’s top prospect Andrew Painter on the come up, with a chance to early every-week starts as soon as this season.”
Suarez went 12-8 with a 3.46 ERA while allowing 140 hits and registering 145 strikeouts over 150.2 innings of work last season, earning his first All-Star selection. He has been a full-time starter for the last three years and owns a career 3.42 ERA since entering the bigs in 2018.
The 29-year-old would absolutely represent a huge pickup for the Yanks, but they would have to surrender a whole lot of assets for him. The Phillies are trying to win a World Series, and Suarez is a big part of that. They don’t seem likely to move him now, regardless of how much depth they have in their rotation.
Perhaps this is something the Yankees can pursue at the trade deadline if Philadelphia is out of playoff contention, but that doesn’t seem all that likely.
We’ll see if New York can try and do something to bolster its ailing rotation in the meantime.
