Yankees Linked to Trade for Shocking Gerrit Cole Replacement

The New York Yankees have lost Gerrit Cole for all of 2025 and probably the early portions of 2026, as the superstar pitcher has undergone Tommy John surgery.

While the Yankees still boast a starting rotation that includes Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt, the loss of Cole leaves a massive hole in their pitching staff, especially with Luis Gil also sidelined for a few months due to a lat strain.

So, will New York swing a big trade to try and replace Cole? There has already been chatter that the Yankees could try and pry Sandy Alcantara away from the Miami Marlins, but that probably isn’t too realistic at the current point in time. But there could be other options available for the Bronx Bombers.

Bleacher Report’s Jack Murray has put together a list of several pitchers the Yankees could potentially target, and one name will definitely be shocking to Yanks fans: Sonny Gray.

The Bronx faithful know Gray very well from his unsuccessful stint with the franchise between 2017 and 2018, when he went 15-16 with a 4.51 ERA.

It seemed to be a case of Gray simply being unable to pitch in New York, as he has been very productive everywhere else he has been. Heck, he finished second in AL Cy Young voting with the Minnesota Twins back in 2023, and last year, he went 13-9 with a respectable 3.84 ERA with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 35-year-old boasts a lifetime 3.51 ERA and would represent a very impressive option had it not been for his less-than-stellar previous stint with the Yankees, and he didn’t exactly seem to enjoy his time in the Big Apple, either.

Chances are, the Yanks probably won’t be going in this direction.
