New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge Puts Gleyber Torres On Notice

New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge seems to have had enough with second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Torres, who is prone to mistakes, had another blunder against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night, running through a stop sign in the seventh inning and getting thrown out at home plate in the process.

The Yankees would end up losing the game.

Torres’ miscue robbed Judge of a chance to potentially do some damage with men on base, and after the game, the AL MVP candidate made it clear that Torres needs to clean things up.

“When it comes down to it, stuff like that can’t happen,” Aaron Judge said, via SNY. “Can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot with mistakes like that on the basepaths. It happens and we’ve got to move on and get ready for tomorrow.”

This is far from the first time Torres has made a costly error, whether it be on the basepaths or in the field.

To Torres’ credit, his bat has certainly woken up after a miserable first half of the season, as he is slashing .295/.363/.422 since the All-Star break. More recently, he is slashing .348/.396/.489 with three home runs and 13 RBI in September. But the mental mistakes have been an ongoing issue for him.

The 27-year-old is slated to hit free agency this offseason, and the general consensus is that the Yankees will not be bringing him back.

On the 2024 campaign overall, Torres is slashing .257/.330/.378 with 15 homers and 63 RBI over 647 plate appearances. He owns a lifetime slash line of .265/.334/.441 and has not materialized like New York hoped after he smashed 38 long balls in his sophomore season back in 2019.

Since that breakout campaign, Torres has posted an .800 OPS just once, which came last year when he registered an .800 mark on the dot.

It will be interesting to see how Gleyber Torres’ market develops this winter, but one thing seems likely: the New York Yankees will look elsewhere.
