New York Rangers Save Millions Thanks to San Jose Sharks

The New York Rangers offseason has been a busy one already. They agreed to an extension with a former No. 2 overall pick, Kaapo Kakko, and placed veteran Barclay Goodrow on waivers. However, their offseason got a whole lot better thanks to the San Jose Sharks.

The San Jose Sharks opted to claim Goodrow off of waivers, which means his salary has been removed from the New York Rangers’ books. General manager Chris Drury no longer has to worry about working out a buyout, as the Sharks will assume his salary.

Goodrow’s value on the books was $3,641,667. The New York Rangers are now projected to have $12.8 million in cap space to enter the offseason with Goodrow’s number being removed from the equation.

Goodrow began his NHL career with the San Jose Sharks in 2014 after going undrafted. He spent the first 5.5 seasons of his career with the franchise before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.

He would remain with the Lightning until the 2021 offseason when he was traded to the New York Rangers. A steady veteran with championship experience, he will be a nice addition to a young Sharks team that finished with the fewest points in the NHL last season.

The end of Goodrow’s tenure with the New York Rangers has turned into a bit of an ugly situation. Because of the no-trade clause that he possesses in his contract, the team opted to waive him, leaving him open to being claimed by any team. Reports are floating around that the San Jose Sharks may have been one of 15 teams on the no-trade list.

Goodrow’s release by the New York Rangers was driven by financial reasons. It opened him up to potentially heading somewhere he doesn’t want to be, but that is unfortunately part of the business sometimes in the NHL.
