New York Knicks Biggest Offseason Need Revealed

The 2024 NBA offseason is a big one for the New York Knicks. They have several players hitting free agency which will lead to some difficult decisions needing to be made. While the front office would love to bring everyone back, that just isn’t feasible.

A lot of the focus will be on free agents OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein. Both played key roles in the New York Knicks’ success this past season and are in line for massive contracts. New York is capped in what they can offer Hartenstein, which could complicate things as another team could offer him a contract approaching $20-25 million annually.

Should Hartenstein depart, finding another center to pair with Mitchell Robinson will become their most pressing need. But, for now, in the opinion of ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the biggest team need this offseason is health and bench scoring.

Had the team had better luck in the health department, there is certainly a chance the Knicks would have been in the Eastern Conference Finals or NBA Finals. But, the scoring need could become an even bigger need depending on how things shake out with the roster.

Veteran Alec Burks, who stepped into a major role near the end of the playoffs because of injuries, is a free agent. Bojan Bogdanovic, who was acquired along with Burks from the Detroit Pistons ahead of the trade deadline, could be joining him in free agency.

If both are moved on, New York’s second unit could use some more scoring punch. Both are proven scorers who struggled at times after being acquired but have track records of being able to fill up the bucket. Losing one or either of them will create a void on the bench.

Luckily, the New York Knicks do have two first-round picks they can use to replenish depth on the roster. They also have a second-round pick that can be used to further reinforce the depth or be used as a sweetener in a trade for a veteran player.
