New York Giants veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton had been away from the team in the early going of OTAs. He was hoping to receive a new contract this offseason, but nothing had been offered that he was willing to accept.

That is, until Thursday. Darius Slayton showed up to the New York Giants voluntary organized team activities after having his contract adjusted. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, some incentives were added to the contract that he was happy with.

ESPN’s Field Yates shared that Darius Slayton originally had $1.5 million in incentives available to reach in 2024. That number has been increased to $2.15 million, which was enough for him to end his holdout and report to the team.

“I’m satisfied. We got done what we needed to get done and just looking forward to playing ball,” Slayton said. “We just adjusted my contract this year a little bit. Just tried to make it a little bit more lucrative. Business is business and I’m here.”

As a free agent in 2023, it was reported during free agency that Darius Slayton was heading to the Atlanta Falcons. That deal fell through, providing the New York Giants to sweep in and retain him with a two-year deal.

A fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Auburn, the 2023 season was the fourth time in five seasons that Darius Slayton led the team in receiving. The only season he didn’t was in 2021 when Kenny Golladay led the team. Slayton was fifth that season, also behind Kadarius Toney, Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard.

The incentives that were added to his contract were not revealed and were far from ideal as guaranteed money is king in the NFL. But, a solution was found that left both sides happy with the outcome.

“I think anybody [wants guaranteed money],” Slayton said. “But at the end of the day, playing the game I love, the game I dreamed about playing as a kid. Happy to be back with my teammates and ready to go.”

It will be interesting to see what Slayton’s role will be with the New York Giants in 2024. He likely isn’t in their long-term plans after the No. 6 pick was used on Malik Nabers in the 2024 NFL Draft. He will be joining 2022 second-round pick Wan’Dale Robinson and 2023 third-round pick Jalin Hyatt atop the depth chart.
