The Nebraska Cornhuskers football program faces yet another significant challenge as one of its promising young talents finds himself entangled in a serious legal matter that threatens to derail his collegiate career. Running back Mekhi Nelson, a redshirt sophomore, was recently taken into custody following an alleged domestic incident involving his girlfriend.

The event has drawn attention well beyond the sports world due to its troubling details, especially given the personal circumstances surrounding the couple.

The arrest took place in a vacation setting far from the Midwest. Authorities responded to reports of a disturbance at the Blue Flamingo Resort in Key West, Florida. Nelson was ultimately charged with misdemeanor battery after officers gathered accounts from both parties involved.

This development comes at a critical time for the player, who had been building momentum on the field and positioning himself for a larger role with the Cornhuskers.

According to the police report obtained by TMZ Sports, the confrontation stemmed from escalating tensions during their trip. Nelson reportedly told officers that the pair had been arguing about how another man—who had also fathered a child with his girlfriend—was speaking to her. He acknowledged personal struggles, noting that his anger problems “seemed to flare up” when addressing the situation with the other individual.

However, the woman provided a markedly different version of events to law enforcement.

She described how Nelson became increasingly irritated while waiting for her to prepare for their vacation activities. An argument broke out, leading her to lock him out of their room temporarily. After he pounded on the door, she allowed him back inside to prevent any complications with their resort stay. Once inside, his frustration reportedly intensified. When she attempted to contact her mother, he allegedly seized her phone and hurled it across the room.

The woman further claimed that Nelson then forcibly removed her bathing suit top and bottoms, causing visible injuries in the process. She sustained a scratch on her stomach during the incident, along with another mark on her thigh. These allegations paint a picture of a volatile encounter that quickly spiraled out of control in what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, the girlfriend informed police that this was not an isolated occurrence. She indicated prior instances of violence within their relationship, raising concerns about a pattern of behavior.

Nelson himself reportedly became emotional while being transported to jail, expressing deep regret and drawing a personal parallel to his family history. He allegedly told authorities he was “just like his father,” who had been incarcerated during his own childhood.

On the football side, Nelson had shown flashes of potential during the previous season. The 6-foot, 195-pound back accumulated 247 yards of total offense and scored two touchdowns in 2025. Heading into the upcoming campaign, he was viewed as a strong contender for increased playing time, competing alongside teammates such as Jamal Rule and Isaiah Mozee. His contributions were expected to bolster Nebraska’s ground game and offensive versatility.

The university has acknowledged the situation but offered limited public remarks.

“The Nebraska Athletic Department and football program are aware of the arrest of Mekhi Nelson in Florida,” Nebraska athletics said in a statement Monday. “We have no further comment at this time.” This measured response reflects the program’s cautious approach while the legal proceedings unfold.

The case highlights broader issues facing student-athletes, including the intersection of personal conduct, mental health, and athletic opportunities. Nelson’s future with the team remains uncertain as authorities continue to investigate the misdemeanor charge. Any conviction or ongoing restrictions could significantly impact his eligibility and standing within the program.

As details continue to emerge, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the scrutiny placed on collegiate athletes. Fans and observers will likely watch closely to see how both Nelson and the Nebraska program navigate the aftermath.

For now, the focus remains on the legal process and the well-being of those involved, particularly with the added complexity of the woman’s pregnancy. She is reported to be seven months along with their second child together.
