Vikings Linked to Super Bowl Champion QB to Challenge J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings have opted not to sign a veteran quarterback thus far this offseason, as they appear set on rolling with J.J. McCarthy in 2025.

However, even if the Vikings plan on starting McCarthy, they should probably bring in an experienced veteran for some insurance, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has identified a perfect candidate for Minnesota in that regard: Joe Flacco.

“While there’s been plenty of buzz about the Vikings and Aaron Rodgers—head coach Kevin O’Connell recently told reporters that the quarterback reached out to Minnesota—Joe Flacco would be a more sensible option,” Knox wrote. “Flacco showed with the Colts last season that he can support a young quarterback and still be ready to start in a pinch. He could do the same in Minnesota without drawing the attention that Rodgers inevitably would.”

Flacco played in eight games and made six starts in Indianapolis this past year, throwing for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 90.5. His numbers were very similar to his 2023 campaign with the Cleveland Browns, when he won the Comeback Player of the Year award.

The 40-year-old probably shouldn’t be starting for anyone at this point, but he is definitely a terrific backup option and would also provide the Vikings with a great mentor for McCarthy.

Flacco famously spent the first 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory during the 2012-13 campaign. Since then, he has bounced around as a backup and a spot starter, spending time with four different teams since departing Baltimore.

It would really behoove Minnesota to add another signal-caller, and Flacco may very well be the best remaining option for the club.
