Odell Beckham Jr.’s latest chapter with the Minnesota Vikings has so far been more about preparation than production.

Signed to the practice squad on October 7 after a brief and quiet return to the New York Giants, the 33-year-old wide receiver was elevated for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Yet when the inactive list came out, Beckham was among those held out, even as Justin Jefferson suited up and Jordan Addison remained sidelined, via Ian Rapoport of NFL media.

The move to Minnesota offered a familiar face in head coach Kevin O’Connell. Beckham and O’Connell shared a Super Bowl LVI run with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, when the receiver arrived midseason and quickly became a productive piece.

In eight regular-season games. he caught 27 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns; across four postseason contests he added 21 receptions for 288 yards, including the opening score of the championship game before an injury ended his day.

That history made the reunion logical when Minnesota sought veteran depth amid injury concerns at receiver.

Beckham’s path back to the field has been uneven. After missing the entire 2025 season while serving a suspension for a performance-enhancing-drug violation, he appeared in nine games with the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and managed only nine catches for 55 yards.

His return to the Giants this summer carried the weight of unfinished business with the franchise that drafted him 12th overall in 2014.

He made the initial 53-man roster but saw limited action—roughly 20 snaps across three games and zero receptions on a single target—before the sides parted on September 29.

Coach John Harbaugh later said the fit simply was not working and that the team needed more from the roster spot.

A New Orleans native and former LSU standout, Beckham carries local ties and a prior relationship with Jefferson’s family from their college days.

Those connections, plus the chance to rejoin a coaching staff that once maximized his abilities, positioned him as insurance rather than a locked-in starter.

The elevation itself signaled Minnesota’s willingness to have him available if Jefferson’s ankle or Addison’s hamstring forced a larger role. With Jefferson active, however, the Vikings kept Beckham on the sideline, preserving his practice-squad elevations for later use while relying on the players already further along in the offense.

For a receiver whose career has been marked by brilliance, setbacks, and repeated attempts at revival, the inactive designation is another incremental step rather than a setback.

Whether he eventually sees meaningful snaps in Minnesota will depend on health, scheme fit, and the continued need for depth behind Jefferson and Addison. For now, the opportunity remains available, even if the first chance to suit up has not yet arrived.
