Milwaukee Brewers Demote 22-Year-Old Pitcher in Sudden Move

The Milwaukee Brewers’ handling of 22-year-old right-hander Joshua Quezada this season has looked more like a development shuttle than a simple demotion, even if the box-score trail runs from Triple-A Nashville to Double-A Biloxi, via the MiLB transaction log.

Quezada, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound pitcher from La Paz Centro, Nicaragua, was never a full-time Nashville Sounds pitcher. On May 16, Milwaukee summoned him from Low-A Wilson for an emergency bullpen fill-in.

Two nights later he was back with the Warbirds. In between, he threw 1.1 scoreless innings against Iowa: no hits, no walks, one strikeout, sinker sitting 93–94 mph in front of more than 10,000 fans at First Horizon Park.

That cameo was the organization’s way of covering a worn Triple-A staff without pulling a Double-A arm off his own path.

Quezada later said a Sounds catcher told him to throw strikes and let Triple-A hitters get themselves out. He did, then returned to Class A to keep working.

The rest of 2026 was a climb, not a slide. Quezada posted a 5-2 record and 5.40 ERA in 45 innings at Wilson, with 59 strikeouts and five saves. In mid-August he moved to High-A Wisconsin (2-0, 6.75 ERA in 10.2 innings).

On Sept. 8, the Brewers assigned him to the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers — a promotion from High-A, not a drop from Nashville. He debuted with 1.1 hitless innings, two strikeouts, and one walk.

Combined across four affiliates he finished 7-2 with a 5.40 ERA, 74 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 58.1 innings.

The path fits how Milwaukee often uses young arms: brief higher-level exposure, then regular work at the next sustainable step.

Quezada signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2023 and was traded to the Brewers in February 2024 for left-hander Clayton Andrews. After two seasons in the Dominican Summer League and a 2025 mix of complex ball and Low-A Carolina, 2026 became his first full stateside year.

Biloxi used him down the stretch and into Southern League playoff preparation.

Milwaukee then sent him to the Arizona Fall League with the Scottsdale Scorpions, a vote of confidence that the organization still sees a reliever with swing-and-miss stuff and room to tighten command.

Calling the Nashville-to-Biloxi line a demotion oversimplifies the file. Quezada’s only Triple-A work was a weekend emergency. His last in-season assignment was up to Double-A.

For a 22-year-old still learning to locate a mid-90s sinker, that is the kind of messy, useful season farm systems are built to produce.
