Milwaukee Brewers Cut Ties With Former High Draft Pick

The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster adjustments ahead of the second game of their set against the San Diego Padres, moves that underscored the constant flux of a contending bullpen in the heart of the stretch run.

After dropping the opener of the series on Monday night, the club still maintained a comfortable five-game lead in the National League Central, yet the front office elected to reshuffle the pitching staff by bringing back right-hander Bryse Wilson on a major-league deal.

To clear the necessary space, Milwaukee designated Lyon Richardson for assignment, ending what proved a very brief stay on the active roster.

Richardson, once a second-round selection of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2018 draft, had only recently seen his contract selected from Triple-A Nashville.

In what may turn out to be his sole appearance in a Brewers uniform, the 26-year-old delivered 1.2 scoreless innings against the Padres, allowing a single walk while recording one strikeout. The outing offered a small bright spot, yet it was not enough to secure his place amid the team’s ongoing evaluation of low-leverage arms.

Wilson’s return essentially reversed a transaction from the previous week, when he himself had been designated and Richardson elevated.

Since rejoining the organization shortly before the All-Star break, Wilson had provided steady innings, working 13 2/3 frames across six outings and allowing just four runs while posting ten strikeouts without issuing a free pass. One rough night in San Francisco aside, he had proven a reliable option for mop-up duty, making him the preferred choice once roster space became available again.

For Richardson, the designation for assignment marks another uncertain chapter in a career that has already spanned parts of four major-league seasons with the Reds and now the Brewers.

Across 42 career appearances totaling 58.1 innings, he carries a 6.48 earned-run average, having struck out 47 batters while walking 40 and surrendering 11 home runs. His limited work this season—3.1 innings with five earned runs allowed—has done little to reverse those broader trends.

Whether he clears waivers and remains in the organization, is claimed by another club, or eventually elects free agency remains to be determined in the coming days.

The Brewers continue to navigate a demanding schedule while protecting their division lead, and such roster churn is often the quiet reality of managing depth.

Richardson’s brief opportunity in Milwaukee closed almost as quickly as it opened, a reminder of how swiftly fortunes can shift for pitchers fighting for a foothold in the big leagues.
