The Miami Heat have spent the summer rewriting their identity. Adding two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson instantly raised the franchise’s ceiling, yet one roster spot remains unfilled.
Team reporter Barry Jackson has indicated that Miami intends to leave that 15th slot vacant for now, waiting to see whether a difference-maker becomes available later in free agency or on the buyout market.
That patience could prove useful if the right veteran center surfaces.
One name already circulating is Brook Lopez, per Sean Jordan of Heat Roundtable. The 38-year-old 7-foot-1 center still has a year left on his deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, a franchise currently in flux.
Lopez has spent two decades as one of the league’s more reliable big men, combining rim protection with an unusually polished three-point stroke.
In 2018-19, he set the single-season record for three-pointers made by a player 7 feet or taller, knocking down 190 from deep while helping Milwaukee reach the Eastern Conference finals.
That shooting touch, paired with his history alongside Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, makes him an intriguing fit if the Clippers decide to sell at the deadline.
Lopez is no longer the two-way anchor he was during the Bucks’ peak years. Last season in Los Angeles he averaged 8.5 points and 1.2 blocks in just under 22 minutes. Age and minutes restrictions are real considerations.
Still, his ability to space the floor from the five and his familiarity with Giannis’s game could give Miami a low-risk, high-upside option off the bench if the Heat’s current backup-center rotation fails to deliver.
A midseason addition of that profile would not require Miami to disrupt its existing core; it would simply add another veteran voice and another floor-spacer to a roster already built around two future Hall of Famers.
Whether Lopez actually becomes available remains speculation. The Heat’s stated plan is to evaluate the roster after a few months of regular-season basketball and then act only if a clear need appears.
In the meantime, the team will open the 2026-27 campaign with fourteen players and the flexibility that comes with an unused roster spot.
If a buyout candidate with Lopez’s skill set does become obtainable, Miami would have both the cap space and the schematic rationale to make the call.
For a club that has already invested heavily in championship contention, that kind of optionality is exactly the sort of quiet advantage front offices like to keep in their back pocket.
