The Cleveland Guardians quietly parted ways with a long-tenured prospect just before opening a three-game set at Fenway Park.

On Sunday, the organization released 27-year-old right-hander Jack Leftwich from Triple-A Columbus, a move that received little fanfare as the club prepared to face the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night, via the MiLB transaction log.

Leftwich’s 2026 season with the Clippers never found traction. In 62 2/3 innings he posted a 6.03 ERA and 1.68 WHIP while striking out 45 batters.

Those numbers marked a clear step backward from the steadier production he had shown climbing the system. Cleveland selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 draft, 216th overall, out of the University of Florida.

The Iowa native never reached the majors.

He spent 2022 bouncing between Single-A and High-A, logged two full seasons at Double-A in 2023 and 2024, then earned his first Triple-A look in 2025 and stayed there all of 2026.

Across 346 2/3 minor-league innings, he finished with a 4.21 ERA and 358 strikeouts, a respectable body of work that ultimately was not enough to keep him in the organization.

The timing of the release coincides with a tense stretch for the parent club. The Guardians sit first in the American League Central at 81-75, clinging to a one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox.

Chicago holds the tiebreaker, so Cleveland cannot afford to stumble.

Even if the division slips away, a wild-card berth remains in play. The White Sox currently occupy the third Wild Card spot at 80-76 and hold a three-game cushion over both Toronto and Houston.

A first-round bye would await Cleveland if the regular season ended today, sending the team straight to the Division Series.

The Guardians arrive in Boston after sweeping the Athletics. They will play three games at Fenway beginning Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. Eastern, then close the regular season with three games in Kansas City against the Royals.

Roster decisions at the edges of the 40-man and the Triple-A depth chart often go unnoticed during a pennant race, yet they still reflect the organization’s attempt to sharpen its pitching options for October.

Leftwich’s departure is one of those quiet adjustments: a seventh-round pick who logged five professional seasons without a big-league appearance now looks for another opportunity elsewhere while Cleveland turns its attention to Fenway and the final week of the schedule.
