The LSU Tigers have opted to sever ties with head coach Brian Kelly following a lackluster run that fell short of expectations for one of college football’s premier programs. The Tigers are now embarking on a critical hunt for fresh leadership, with several prominent figures already surfacing as potential successors.

Since Kelly’s arrival in 2022, LSU posted a 34-14 overall mark and a 19-10 ledger within the Southeastern Conference—numbers that ultimately proved insufficient to secure his position.

As the program turns the page on this underwhelming chapter, the pressure is immense to nail the upcoming appointment. Early speculation has centered on coaches like Lane Kiffin, Jon Sumrall, and plenty of other options as well.

Adding intrigue to the mix, ex-NFL head coach Jon Gruden has openly expressed his eagerness to return to the sidelines in the SEC. He’s emerged as a dark-horse contender in LSU’s ongoing search.

In a recent examination of viable options for the vacancy, USA Today highlighted several possibilities, with Gruden making the cut.

“Gruden at LSU? Pure theater,” John Adams of USA Today wrote.

Bringing Gruden aboard would inject undeniable excitement into Baton Rouge. Few in the sport match his passion for the game. Despite past controversies that prompted his exit from the Las Vegas Raiders, his coaching prowess remains unquestioned.

Beyond Gruden, the piece floated a pair of less-discussed heavyweights: Urban Meyer and Nick Saban.

Realistically, the odds favor none of these three veterans landing the gig. Kiffin appears the frontrunner on paper, though his commitment to Ole Miss could complicate matters. The situation will unfold in due course, but Gruden merits monitoring as a wildcard.

Across his NFL tenure, Gruden compiled a 117-112 record, capped by a Super Bowl triumph with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2002 campaign. If LSU rolls the dice on Gruden, the spectacle alone would catapult the Tigers into must-watch territory across the college landscape.
