Recent Los Angeles Lakers rumors have swirled about what the team would do with their head coaching position, with JJ Redick being mentioned more than once. They fired Darvin Ham after two seasons at the helm, following two eliminations during the NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Denver Nuggets.
Since firing Ham, several candidates have been mentioned as replacements. Currently, employed head coaches Tyronn Lue and Jason Kidd were tossed around. Mike Budenholzer, who has since been hired by the Phoenix Suns, was mentioned. A reunion with Frank Vogel was also a possibility.
But, if recent Lakers rumors are to be believed, the team has zoned in on a candidate; former NBA sharpshooter, JJ Redick. A current analyst at ESPN he also has two popular podcasts, Redick has zero NBA coaching experience but is considered the frontrunner.
The update was provided by NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.
“I’m told that last week the Lakers met with JJ Redick for an extended period of time.
He was the first person to do a face to face meeting and my sense is that he’s the frontrunner for this job,” Charania said during his appearance.
This would be a massive risk for the Lakers if they hire JJ Redick. Redick played in the NBA for 15 seasons with six different franchises but has not been on the sidelines yet post-playing career.
.He has zero coaching experience in the NBA, let alone being a head coach. Can a team with a championship-or-bust mentality find success with a neophyte leader on the sideline?
It certainly sounds like that could be the case based on recent Lakers rumors. The team reportedly believes that JJ Redick had Pat Riley-like potential as a head coach. Riley got his coaching career started in the NBA with the Lakers and Los Angeles sounds like they want to catch lightning in a bottle again.
