The Los Angeles Clippers 2023-24 NBA season came to a close on Friday night. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks, losing the series in six games.

Speculation has already begun about how the franchise could look for the 2024-25 season. Paul George is set to hit free agency and the future of fellow superstars James Harden and Russell Westbrook have also come into question.

Arguably the most important thing for the Los Angeles Clippers to figure out is the future of head coach Tyronn Lue. There have been rumblings that Lue is atop the Los Angeles Lakers’ wish list to be their next head coach. With other vacancies looming, Lue could become a popular candidate for several franchises.

Those are rumors the Clippers want to put to rest as soon as possible. According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Los Angeles is attempting to work out a contract extension with their head coach.

Lue’s contract runs through the 2025-26 regular season, so one of the goals of the Clippers is to avoid a lame-duck situation. While Lue did admit being wanted by other teams feels good, the job he currently holds is the one he wants to keep.

“I didn’t come here to bounce around and go all over the place,” Tyronn Lue said after Friday’s loss to Dallas. “And Mr. [Steve] Ballmer, Lawrence [Frank], Mark [Hughes], Trent [Redden], Gillian [Zucker], they’ve all been great to me. This is where I want to be, and hopefully they feel the same way. So I haven’t had a bad experience since I’ve been here. Mr. Ballmer showed me a lot of different things that I wouldn’t be privy to if I wasn’t here.

“… Just having a great relationship with the owner, with the front office, it is great. And so I would love to be here long term.”

The 2024 season ended on a sour note for the Los Angeles Clippers as star Kawhi Leonard was unable to stay healthy because of inflammation in his knee. That is nothing new for the franchise, as it feels as though they have spent as much time playing without Leonard in the lineup as they have with him since he signed in 2019.

Running it back with their core seems to be the plan as of now. Tyronn Lue is part of that plan, as ownership wants to see things through with hopefully a healthy campaign by all involved.
