The 2024 MLB season has not been a good one for the Colorado Rockies. They have struggled in every facet of the game, as their pitching isn’t getting the job done and their lineup has been inconsistent with the bats.

As a result, the Rockies made some ugly MLB history to start the season. Colorado was 7-24 entering Friday night’s game on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates. But, for all of those games, they trailed at one point.

The 31-game game streak was a modern-era record, which speaks to just how much the Rockies have struggled. But, that streak is no longer, as it was snapped at PNC Park on Friday evening.

“I’ll sleep a little better because I haven’t been sleeping well at all,” Rockies manager Bud Black said with a laugh after he was reminded that the streak was over. “Really, it’s been awful.”

In the sixth inning of a scoreless game, Ryan McMahon broke the tie with a 445-foot solo home run that splashed into the Allegheny River. Later in the inning, Brandon Rodgers and Elehuris Montero added RBI singles to give Colorado a 3-0 lead.

“It’s kind of like the goal of every hitter when you come in here to really juice one because you want to see it go in there,” McMahon said. His home run was the 71st to reach the river.

It was a lead that they would not relinquish, even though things did get a little hairy in the ninth inning. Oneil Cruz launched a home run of his own, cutting the lead to 3-2 with one out and becoming te 72nd ball to reach the Allegheny.

But, Jalen Beeks struck out Connor Joe and Jared Triolo to put the finishing touches on the game. It gave Cal Quantril his first victory of the season, as he pitched into the eighth inning, giving up only three hits with nine strikeouts.
