As the Phoenix Suns grapple with another challenging season, star forward Kevin Durant finds himself at a crossroads.

Despite the Suns’ difficulties and earlier attempts to trade him, Durant remains open to staying in Phoenix, potentially signing a lucrative extension this summer.

After the February trade deadline, when the Suns explored trade options for Durant, his discontent became apparent.

However, according to Logan Murdock of The Ringer, Durant, who will be eligible for a two-year, $122 million extension, has expressed openness to remaining with the team.

The Suns, who boast the NBA’s most expensive roster with over $366 million committed between payroll and luxury taxes, struggle to make the Western Conference play-in tournament.

With a record of 35-40, they trail the Sacramento Kings by just one game for the final playoff spot. Phoenix has not had postseason success recently. It has not secured a playoff win since May 7, 2023, and was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round last year.

These struggles come despite high financial commitments and the presence of star players like Durant and Devin Booker.

Durant, who expressed frustration with being the subject of trade rumors earlier this season, remains a valuable asset. With a $54.7 million expiring contract next season, he could attract considerable interest on the trade market, especially given the weak free agent class expected this summer.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia has indicated a reluctance to trade Booker and the complexity of moving Bradley Beal, who possesses a full no-trade clause. This leaves Durant as a potential key piece in any major roster changes aimed at acquiring long-term assets.

As the Suns weigh their options, the decision to either trade or extend Durant will significantly influence their strategy moving forward. Despite the lack of championship contention, retaining Durant could help maintain fan interest and ticket sales with his high-level play alongside Booker.
