The New York Jets are actually one of the more intriguing teams to monitor entering the NFL Draft, as they don’t have a clear direction heading into next month.
The Jets own the seventh overall pick, which has led to some wondering if they could take a quarterback. Some have even speculated that Shedeur Sanders could slip to New York, but that doesn’t seem very likely.
In the event that both Cam Ward and Sanders are gone by the time the Jets are on the clock, could they do something wild like select Jaxson Dart? Or would they maybe trade down and take a quarterback a little later in the first round?
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated doesn’t envision that happening and is not expecting Gang Green to select a quarterback.
“I’d be a little surprised if the Jets took a quarterback in the first round,” Breer wrote. “I’ve heard that Justin Fields’s camp did a lot of homework and really prioritized having a spot where he could be the clear-cut starter. I don’t know if his new team gave him that assurance, but he obviously felt good about the opportunity he’d have there.”
New York signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency, but whether or not the Jets actually view him as their quarterback of the future is debatable.
Many feel that the former No. 11 overall pick will simply be a placeholder until New York finds a better option, and if Sanders is on the board when the Jets are on the clock, it seems fairly difficult to imagine New York passing on him.
The Jets do have other needs, too, but quarterback is certainly the biggest one, as Fields remains largely unproven and was Russell Wilson’s backup in Pittsburgh this past season.
Another option for New York would be to select a quarterback on Day 2, where guys like Jalen Milroe, Will Howard and Tyler Shough are likely to be available.
We’ll see what the Jets decide to do in a few weeks.
