Commanders Urged To Pursue Cowboys’ Offensive Star

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is getting set to hit free agency, and David Harrison of Sports Illustrated thinks the Washington Commanders could be a potential fit.

Harrison notes that the Commanders could use another halfback to complement Brian Robinson Jr. in the backfield, as the club had very limited depth behind him this season.

Pollard played in every game this year, rushing for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns while averaging a pedestrian four yards per carry. He also hauled in 55 receptions for 311 yards.

It was Pollard’s first season as the Cowboys’ clear-cut featured back, and while he did put up decent counting stats, the efficiency clearly was not there.

Contrast that with the 2022 campaign, when Pollard totaled 1,007 yards and nine scores on the ground, logging 5.2 yards per attempt. That season, Ezekiel Elliott was still in tow, so there was less pressure on Pollard to produce and he had Elliott to help wear down the opposing defense.

Perhaps Pollard would be able to rediscover his previous production if he joined a team that already had a solid running back in place (like Washington).

Pollard, who played his collegiate football at the University of Memphis, was selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He had a rather limited role over his first couple of seasons, but in 2021, he showed signs of breaking out, registering 719 yards and a pair of touchdowns while averaging a robust 5.5 yards per tote.

Meanwhile, Robinson tallied 733 yards while reaching the end zone five times as a rusher in 2023. He posted 4.1 yards per carry and also caught 36 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns.

The Commanders went 4-13 this year.
