Robby Ashford has embarked on a new chapter in his college football journey, marking his second transfer during his collegiate career. After departing from Oregon and opting for Auburn following the 2021 season, Ashford has once again decided to switch schools, this time within the SEC. The highly-regarded four-star recruit is now making his way to South Carolina, where he will play under the leadership of head coach Shane Beamer.
Ashford’s choice to enter the transfer portal followed a season in which he had limited playing time. Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne solidified his position as Auburn’s starting quarterback, a role that seems likely to remain unchanged in 2024.
Ashford’s decision to enter the transfer portal came shortly after the conclusion of the regular season in December. Roughly a month later, he has found his new destination.
South Carolina was in dire need of a new quarterback since Spencer Rattler had moved on to the NFL. Their season took a downturn, failing to secure a bowl game for the first time under Beamer and finishing with a 5-7 record after a four-game losing streak marred the middle of their campaign.
During his backup role this season, Ashford completed 14 of 27 passes for only 145 yards, managing two touchdowns and two interceptions. The hiring of Hugh Freeze, who favored Thorne, indicated that Ashford was likely headed for a different team.
The 2024 season will unveil how this transfer pans out for both Ashford and the Gamecocks. Notably, they won’t face Auburn in the regular season, denying Ashford the opportunity for revenge against his former team.
