Seahawks’ Pete Carroll Reveals Injury Update For Geno Smith

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith missed his team’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers this past weekend due to a groin injury, and head coach Pete Carroll provided an update on him this week.

“We’ll see how he comes back,” Carroll said, via John Boyle of the Seahawks’ official team website. “These couple of days right here are just so valuable for him, getting all the treatment he gets, and then just the rest time. We don’t practice again until Thursday, so we’ve got a break here.”

In 12 starts this season, Smith has thrown for 2,918 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.1.

Drew Lock started in place of Smith against the 49ers and put forth a middling performance, going 22-for-31 with 269 yards, a couple of touchdowns and a pair of picks.

While Lock wasn’t terrible, Seattle would obviously prefer to have Smith back on the field, especially in its current desperate state.

The Seahawks were once 6-3, but they have lost four straight games to fall to 6-7 and out of the NFC playoff picture. There are currently five teams sitting at 6-7, with the Green Bay Packers holding the final postseason berth in the conference at the moment due to tiebreakers.

Smith is now in his fifth season in Seattle and his second campaign as the full-time starter. He was thrust into the starting role after the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in March 2022. Geno Smith was a pleasant surprise last year, making his first Pro Bowl appearance after finishing with 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also led the NFL in completion percentage, making good on 69.8 percent of his throws.

The 33-year-old spent his first four NFL seasons with the New York Jets and then played one year with both the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers before ultimately joining Seattle in 2019.

The Seahawks will take on the Philadelphia Eagles next Monday. Whether or not Smith actually suits up for the critical matchup remains to be seen.
